Getting Rid of “Old Stories” We Tell Ourselves
I'm a faculty member at GoodVibeUniversity where we have a forum called "Old Story Pot." It's where we throw our "old stories" or "limiting beliefs" that we tell ourselves into a pot and get rid of them once and for all. The idea is that in doing so, we then release them and allow more good stuff in.
Society, our upbringing, messages from the media and what we tell ourselves inside our own heads often limit us - if we choose to believe these stories. Getting rid of limiting beliefs is a choice. When you begin to become aware of just how many beliefs you have that don't serve you in living a joyful life, it can be freeing to start throwing them into the "Old Story Pot."
I didn't just post these two stories into the "Old Story Pot" forum at GVU this morning, I decided to throw them out in the garbage (and not the recycling bin either)! hee hee My two "old stories" are "Act your age!" and "Don't be so childish!"
What does "acting your age" really mean, anyway? It's this notion that we must "conform" our behavior to a more mature, "adult-way" of doing things. What does "adult-way" actually mean? And is there a difference in how you think an "adult" of 25 years of age should behave and another who is 75 years old? If the answer is "yes," I encourage you to challenge these beliefs.
Holding on to these notions or "old stories" can limit you in living a life of joy. When we refrain from being "child-like" through play, joy and other fun behavior that's typically found in children, we restrict ourselves. We get more stressed, we don't have as much fun, we worry and we attract more worries and stress to our lives as a result.
Yet letting go of these notions takes practice. Often, some adults may find Laughter Yoga to be unsettling because we let our inhibitions go and act playful. In Laughter Yoga, we laugh a lot (like children do). I don't know about you, but laughing a lot sounds and FEELS really good to me! I've found that once my Laughter Yoga group gets started, most people drop these inhibitions and just have fun. The laughter is contagious and it's "OK" and "safe" to be "adults" playing and acting child-like.

A virtual class is a good way to "ease into" an in-person class as we don't see each other on the call. You can even show up in your pajamas! hee hee While the beauty of Laughter Yoga classes is the connection between the people in the class and I do believe that in-person classes have more benefit for this reason, there is great value in just laughing for no reason. In doing so, you are making a choice to at least challenge these "old stories." You're making a choice to BE joy! And guess what? When you're in joy, you enJOY! 🙂
